The history of locks can be traced to an archaeological dig in which a lock believed to be about four thousand years old was found. From there, the locks evolution involves a countless number of designs by a cast of thousands of inventors. In fact, between the years of 1774 and 1920 American lock makers patented over three thousand different types of locking devices.
Mortise locks are considered to be generally found in older architectural applications, a fore runner to the bored cylindrical locks that are primarily used today. However, mortise locks are still used in high security business applications and are becoming more popular in upscale commercial and residential construction.
A mortise lock requires a pocket (the mortise) to be cut into the edge of the door where the lock will be fitted. One of the strongest styles of locks, a mortise lock makes it difficult to force open a door because it is fitted into the thickness of the door. Cut into the door edge, only the faceplate remains disable when the door is open.
Our mortise entry sets are available in a variety of beautiful styles and finishes. Attempted installation of a mortise lock by an average homeowner is not recommended, due to the labor intensive nature and woodworking knowledge required.
