Door knockers have been in existence, probably, as long as doors themselves. Consisting of two parts, a plate attached to the door, and a hinged piece that can be lifted and knocked against the plate, a door knocker is a fixture attached to an exterior door thats function is to alert people inside that someone is outside. Since glass was not readily available, or further back, not even invented yet, people in the past had no way to see approaching visitors. Intended to save on knuckle wear and tear, the door knocker could be knocked lightly or pounded loudly if needed, to announce ones' arrival. Clearly this door hardware was the forerunner to electric door bells. Today most homes are equipped with door bells, but many still utilize a door knocker for the style and beauty that it adds to a homes entrance. There has been a resurgence in popularity of door knockers used basically for decorative purposes, with some knockers also containing viewers.
