The Arts and Crafts Movement, focusing on individual design and craftsmanship, dates from about 1870 to 1920, and is best characterized by the simple design and hand crafting of the period.

The Arts and Crafts Movement originated in England and became part of a search for a new, authentic, and meaningful style in architecture and the decorative arts. Spreading throughout Europe the movement also triggered a revolt against the injustice and harsh working environments in the factories of the Industrial Revolution.

The Arts and Crafts Movement surfaced in the United States around 1910 and is often referred to as ''Mission Style'', reflecting the design influence of the American Southwest. Common design includes local and natural materials, highlighted by earthy organic colors.
